The Accademia Gallery is famous all over the world for hosting some of the most important artworks by Michelangelo Buonarroti: the statue of David, the statues of Prisoners and the St.Matthew.
Within the gallery you also find many other works of art from the Renaissace, religious works in the Gothic style and the “Gipsoteca Bartolini”, a room which hosts sculptures in plaster dating back to the 19th-century and the new Department of Musical Instruments, an important collection of instruments that belonged to the Medici and the Lorraine families.
Up until November 4, 2012, the Gallery will also host the exhibition “Art returns to Art”: a collection of contemporary artworks made by important artists including: Picasso, Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon. The exhibit includes the rooms dedicated to the permanent exhibition, the David’s Tribune, the Gallery of the Prisoners, the Gipsoteca, the Sala del Colosso.
Special Openings Until the End Of September:
Every Tuesday until the end of September, the Academy and the exhibition “Art returns to Art“ will be open late up to 10pm. The entrance costs € 11 (full price), € 5,50 (reduced).
On these nights, you will also have the chance to visit the museum as part of a free guided tour of the exhibition and the Department of Musical Instruments – tour starts at 7pm and 8.30pm.
While on Thursdays, between 7pm to 10pm, entry to the exhibition “Art returns to Art” is completely free.
