On Saturday June 16th the Luminara returns to Pisa, one of the most suggestive and amusing summer events in Tuscany. It opens the door to the feast day of San Ranieri, Pisa’s patron saint, celebrated the day after with the Regatta of San Ranieri.
For the occasion the city, a lovely medieval pearl, is adorned with 70.000 lit candles placed on the buildings, bridges and churches along the River Arno to create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere. Some lights are also floated on the waters of the Arno while the Leaning Tower and its fortified wall are lit with oil lamps.
To end the evening with a bang, around 11.30pm you can enjoy a wonderful fireworks show from the Cittadella, a fortress in Pisa which dates back to the fifteenth century.
The patron saint’s feast day continues on Sunday with the unmissable Regatta of Saint Ranieri where the four neighborhoods of Pisa compete against each other in honor of the nautical tradition of the city to win the “Palio”.
Yuu can read more about the Luminara and Regatta of San Ranieri on our two articles dedicated to the two events.
We hope you enjoy this magical weekend in Pisa 🙂
